This Fleet Services business was supported by our Supply Chain Fund
The Supply Chain Fund collaborates with our procurement departments to identify black suppliers and facilitate business opportunities for black-empowered small and medium enterprises.
It assists in pairing up black entrepreneurs with businesses which seek to transform their ownership in line with the black economic empowerment (BEE) Scorecard, and also facilitates partnerships with black entrepreneurs who have viable business ideas and teams of people who can help make these a reality.
On a financial level, Anglo American Zimele invests into businesses by means of minority equity and loan finance. This is supplemented with practical support and guidance in areas such as corporate governance, safety, health, environment, legal, accounting, company secretarial aspects and public relations.
This incubator-style process allows the investee company to ‘stand on its own feet’, with the resultant effect being sustainable job creation and socio-economic development.
Services
This fund’s role in any merger or acquisition is to provide a suite of services – from financial assistance and mentoring, to business planning and training programmes.
At the outset, our involvement is intensive as we aim to engage with our investee companies and their new empowerment partners. Our minority stake in these businesses allows Anglo American Zimele access to the boardroom and influence in key decision-making processes.
Services include:
- Developing business plans
- Assistance with selecting a BEE partner
- Provision of finance for the acquisition of assets and working capital
- Assistance with company formation and provision of ongoing company secretarial and administrative services
- Assistance with integrating the BEE partner into the business
- The creation of a training and development plan for the transfer of skills to the BEE partner
- General mentoring and coaching of the BEE partner
- Assistance with marketing the business to our business units specifically for supply linkages, market development and expansion
- Provision of ongoing strategic, operational, financial and business support through representation on the board in a non-executive capacity
- Guidance on corporate governance issues, corporate ethics, safety, health and environmental standards and HIV/AIDS

Investment guidelines
Individual investments by our Supply Chain Fund range up to a maximum of R5 million per project, and ventures that demonstrate substantial prospects for job creation are favourably considered. If the fund acquires an equity stake in the business, this will not exceed 49% of the share capital of the investee company.
