Godfrey Gomwe
Chairman
Godfrey Gomwe Godfrey Gomwe is the executive director of Anglo American South Africa. He was previously head of group business development, Africa for Anglo American, and prior to that, finance director and chief operating officer of Anglo American South Africa. He is chairman of Anglo American Zimele and Tshikululu Social Investments and has served on a number of Anglo American operating boards and executive committees. Before moving to South Africa in 2003, he was chairman and chief executive of Anglo American Zimbabwe. He is a past president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe and past senior vice president of the Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe. He has held many directorships in both listed and unlisted companies. Godfrey is a Chartered Accountant (Zimbabwe), and holds a Masters degree in Business Leadership from the University of South Africa.
Nick van Rensburg
Managing director
Nick van Rensburg has worked in the enterprise development arena for more than 20 years and has headed the Anglo American Zimele team since 1997. He has been instrumental in building links with the International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group, and continues to share the Anglo American Zimele model with other corporate role players, both locally and globally (including South America and the Russian states), who are focused on boosting their enterprise development initiatives in their respective sectors and countries. His expertise includes guiding and developing policies for business linkage programmes, procurement, transformation, sustainable entrepreneurship and junior mining. He also facilitated Anglo American Zimele’s involvement in the compilation of the black economic empowerment (BEE) Codes of Good Practice. Nick holds a BCom degree from the University of South Africa and a National Diploma in Cost Accounting from the Witwatersrand Technikon.
Sam Martin
Non-executive director
Sam Martin is the commercial manager of Anglo Inyosi Coal, a R7 billion BEE company in which Anglo American has a 73% shareholding. He started his career with Anglo American in 1994, and has extensive experience in finance, business development, strategy, transactions and project management. Sam is a qualified chartered accountant.
Norman Mbazima
Non-executive director
Norman Mbazima, FCCA – ZICA is CEO of Anglo American’s Thermal Coal division. He was with Deloitte & Touche for 17 years in the accounting profession. He joined the Anglo American Group in April, 2001, where he began his career at Konkola Copper Mines PLC. He was previously global chief financial officer for Anglo Coal and became executive director of finance at Anglo Platinum in June 2006. He later stepped in as joint acting chief executive. Norman Mbazima was appointed CEO of Scaw Metals in May 2008 and was appointed CEO of Thermal Coal in October 2009.
Don Tooth
Non-executive director
Don Tooth has been employed with the Anglo American/De Beers Group of companies in various positions for the past 30 years, having attained a BCom degree in accounting at the University of Pretoria in 1983. He joined Anglo American Farms (Vergelegen) in 1985 as a management accountant and has held the position of managing director since July 2000. He has a thorough knowledge of wines and the industry as a whole.

Lia Vangelatos
Chief investment manager
Lia Vangelatos has been employed at Anglo American since 1979, and has filled various corporate finance, financial, management accounting, treasury and business development positions. She is the chief investment manager at Anglo American Zimele, where she takes a leading role in the investment process, providing strategic direction and adding value to the portfolio of investments. Lia has a deep understanding of the small business environment and holds a BCompt degree, an MBL (cum laude) and a Doctorate in Business Leadership through UNISA. In 1989, UNISA’s Graduate School of Business Leadership awarded her the Board’s Gold Medal for best MBL student out of a class of 151 graduates and a scholarship for doctoral studies. The central theme of Lia’s doctorate was the development of a holistic integrated management model for South African companies.
Petersan Mothudi
Supply Chain Fund – fund manager
Petersan Mothudi was born in Marapyane, Mpumalanga, and completed his BCompt degree cum laude at Vista University in 2000. In 2001, while completing his honours through UNISA, he lectured at Vista part-time. Peter then joined Deloitte for a three-year training programme in 2002 and, for a further two years, acted as a manager. In 2006, he joined ABAS (Anglo Internal Audit) as an audit manager, later being promoted to senior audit manager. Showing great skill in facilitation, consultation, planning, reporting and mentoring, Peter was appointed Supply Chain Fund manager with Anglo American Zimele in 2009. He fulfils a non-executive director role in a number of Anglo American Zimele’s investee companies and is a chartered accountant.
Mxolisi Kota
Anglo Khula Mining Fund – fund manager
Mxolisi Kota has a wealth of knowledge and experience gained as an exploration geologist for the Council of Geosciences. During his time at the Council, he was involved with a number of projects and was, until recently, head of the Mineral Resources Development Unit. He will soon be graduating with his Masters in Business Administration from the University of Stellenbosch Business School, which complements his Master of Science Degree in exploration geology from Rhodes University in Grahamstown.
Louwrens de Jager
Communities Fund – fund manager
Witbank-born Louwrens de Jager completed his schooling at General Hertzog High School and furthered his education at the Rapid Result College and UNISA, where he completed his Banking Diploma and Bachelor of Commerce Degree, respectively. Louwrens started his working career as a clerk at Volkskas Bank in 1981, and in 1986 was appointed treasurer for the Witbank Prison Recreation Club with the Department of Correctional Services. He joined Anglo American Thermal Coal in 1989, and has been working with the Anglo American Group since then. He moved across to the Anglo American Zimele team in May 2000, and is manager of the Communities Fund.
Mondli Guma
Olwazini Fund – fund manager
Mondli Guma joined the team in January 2010 and manages the transactions and initiatives of Anglo American Zimele’s Olwazini Fund. Mondli has a background in chemical and process engineering, having obtained his BSc (ChemEng) degree with honours from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2006. He will soon be graduating with his MSc (Eng) degree from the same institution, with an environmental engineering specialisation in the mining and minerals processing industry. He has been awarded the Harry Crossley Foundation Research Fellowship, Daimler Chrysler postgraduate scholarship and the UCT equity scholarship, in addition to appearing on the Dean’s Merit List throughout his undergraduate studies. Mondli joined Anglo American in February 2009 as a management trainee on the Group’s High Potential Graduate Programme.

Harry Calver
Chairman
Harry Calver Harry retired from Anglo American in 2008, after almost 40 years of involvement with the Group’s operations, projects and techno-business activities of the Technical Directors Office. He is now a technical consultant with years of experience in reviewing and evaluating investment opportunities gained as the Group Head of Engineering. Harry has been involved with major project developments worldwide and holds directorships in a number of mining and industrial companies in southern Africa. He has a BSc in engineering (honours) and management development diplomas from Unisa and The Harvard Business School. Harry is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors (South Africa) and is passionate about safety and the development of sustainable broad-based black economic empowerment initiatives.
Des de Jager
Des has worked in a number of industries, including the retail, manufacturing, farming and transportation sectors. He has played various administrative and operational roles, and has gained six years of exposure in African countries. He has been at Khula Enterprise Finance for the past five years and works in the role of chief risk officer. He was heavily responsible for Khula obtaining permission from government to lend directly to small and medium enterprises. Des was also responsible for setting up the internal audit function for a large retail group and has served on the Board of Governors of the Institute of Internal Auditors of South Africa for a number of years.
Mkhululi Mazibuko
Mkhululi has been involved in the development finance environment for almost 10 years and has a special interest in small and medium enterprise (SME) finance and development programmes. He is the chief operating officer at Khula Enterprise Finance, which facilitates access to finance for SMEs through a network financing partners.
Setlakalane Molepo
Setlakalane graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand with a BSc in civil engineering and later completed a Certificate in Financial Management and a Masters Degree in Business Leadership. He played a number of roles at the Industrial Development Corporation where he was exposed to the small and medium-sized enterprise sector. In 2009, he became managing director of Khula Enterprise Finance. Setlakalane is a member of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering and the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). He is registered as professional engineer with ECSA.
James Morotoba
James has been with Anglo American for 15 years, working in both opencast and underground coal mining operations. He later became general manager of Isibonelo Colliery and then Landau Colliery, a position he holds today. At Isibonelo, he was instrumental in establishing the safety systems and culture that turned Isibonelo into a model mine in terms of safety. James graduated with a BSc degree in mining engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand. He later completed the Management Development Programme at the University of Stellenbosch. He also has an MBA qualification from De Montfort University. He is a member of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and a council member of the South African Colliery Managers Association.
Michael Rogers
Michael is a professional engineer and obtained his BSc in mining engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand. He started his career with Johannesburg Consolidated Investments (JCI) Limited in 1968, and has gained experience at operational and executive level in the platinum, gold, coal, base metal and antimony mining industries. He is currently the Executive Head: Joint Ventures at Anglo American's Platinum business.
