We hold advantageous positions in the most structurally attractive commodities, and have taken steps to concentrate on our core mining portfolio. This has involved a series of divestments, including the demerger of the Mondi Group and the sale of our shareholdings in AngloGold Ashanti, Highveld Steel and Vanadium, Namakwa Sands, Tongaat Hulett and Hulamin.
Other southern African assets identified for divestment are Scaw South Africa and our Gamsberg, Black Mountain and Skorpion mines.
Platinum
Our platinum business is the world’s primary producer of platinum group metals (PGMs), and accounts for around 40% of newly mined platinum globally. Our platinum operations exploit South Africa’s Bushveld Complex, the world's richest reserve of PGMs.

Iron ore
Our iron ore business was the first dedicated iron ore company to be listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and is the world's fourth-largest supplier of seaborne iron ore. In 2010 Kumba exported more than 80% of its total iron ore sales volumes of 43.2 M, with 61% of these exports destined for China and remainder to Europe, Japan, South Korea and the Middle East.

Our thermal coal business in South Africa has the dual focus of not only expanding its strong export business but meeting the country’s energy demands to sustain economic growth. Locally, we own and operate 10 mines of which seven are wholly owned.

Diamonds
Anglo American owns 45% of De Beers, the world's foremost diamond business with interests in more than 20 countries extending across five continents. Its mines, which are situated in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Canada, produce as much as 40% by value of the world’s supply of rough diamonds.

Anglo American Technical Division
Anglo American Technical Division is the custodian of our specialised technologies and is made up of a team of world-class technical professionals. It transfers best practice across our business units and participates in reviews and audits to ensure the most appropriate technology is selected for capital projects in new and existing operations. In conjunction with other partners, it also develops technology to improve safety, sustainable development and operational efficiency. It also supports our human resources in the fields of geosciences, mining, metallurgy, engineering and project management.
