Our Difference

“Our contribution to South Africa is deep and meaningful. In creating a lasting positive legacy, we supplement the value generated through our core activities, with initiatives designed to develop host communities in the long term, including investments in health facilities, jobs, skills and infrastructure.” Andile Sangqu, executive head of Anglo American in South Africa

Community Development

We work with communities to help create mutual trust and success. Only by working together can we change the way people think about resource development and about how we can make a valuable difference to the everyday lives of people in our communities.

As a responsible miner, we take all our environmental and social obligations seriously. To be productive, safe, responsible and sustainable, our operations must live alongside thriving communities. That is why we work together with local government, community leaders and NGOs to determine how best to contribute to community needs.

In fact, over the last five years, our businesses in South Africa have invested R3.2 billion on developing our mine communities through infrastructure development in healthcare, education, housing and sanitation, increasing local capacity and other initiatives.

We are helping to ensure long-term and sustainable economic growth and social progress within our mine communities by placing a heavy focus on local procurement, training and recruitment and supporting small and medium-sized businesses.

Our efforts are fully aligned to our host communities' own aspirations as well as government priorities, which reflects our commitment to fulfilling our Social and Labour Plans (SLPs). Find out more in our latest Sustainability Report.

Beyond our mines, we also seek to benefit the country through our dedicated Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiative in South Africa – Anglo American's Chairman's Fund. Through the Fund, we are making a social investment on a national scale, extending a helping hand to rural South Africa where the burden of poverty is high.

Over the past five years, we have invested over R431.5 million in social development through our Chairman's Fund. The Chairman's Fund focuses on early childhood development; teacher development in mathematics, science and languages; infrastructure support to rural schools; innovative HIV/AIDS prevention programmes; and the general strengthening of public healthcare. We also support skills development through livelihood projects as well as welfare and community development initiatives through various respected charities and NGOs.
