A gemologist apraises the final cut gems at the Steinmetz polishing factory in the Gaberone Diamond Park Anglo American owns 45% of De Beers, the world's foremost diamond business with interests in more than 20 countries extending across five continents.
Its mines, which are situated in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Canada, produce as much as 40% by value of the world’s supply of rough diamonds.
Apart from Anglo American, other shareholders are Oppenheimer family-owned company Central Holdings with 40% and the Government of the Republic of Botswana (GRB) with 15%.
De Beers holds a 50% interest in both the Debswana Diamond Company and the Namdeb Diamond Corporation, owned jointly with the GRB and the Namibian government, respectively, as well as a 70% shareholding in De Beers Marine Namibia.
It also has a 74% shareholding in South African-based De Beers Consolidated Mines, with the Ponahalo Group, a broad-based black economic empowerment consortium, holding the balance.
