Our aim is to develop mutually beneficial, sustainable relationships with our suppliers.

Globally, Anglo American spends about US$10 billion a year with suppliers. We procure a broad range of capital equipment, goods and services, and we embrace free and fair competition.
In South Africa, we create long-term, ethical supply relationships with local businesses located around our operations that are mutually beneficial for all involved. We support and comply with the Mining Charter, which requires that companies source a percentage of the goods, services and capital equipment that they procure from companies owned and/or managed by ‘historically-disadvantaged South Africans’ (HDSAs). This is a legislative requirement aimed at redressing the economic legacies of apartheid.
Our enterprise development arm, Anglo American Zimele works closely with us to help identify black economic empowerment suppliers who can work with us. In 2009, Anglo American-managed businesses spent a total of $2.2 billion with HDSA businesses, exceeding our target of $1.72 billion.
