Financial contribution to South Africa

In South Africa, Anglo American has traditionally played an important role in the growth of the country’s economy and since 1999 has invested more than R143.7 billion in local capital projects.

Significant further expansion is already in the pipeline and an additional R51,7 billion has been approved for further projects in the Group's Platinum, Iron Ore and Thermal Coal businesses.

Accounting for as much as 4% of the nation's gross domestic product by revenue, we are the largest tax contributor to the South African government.

We are also a leading contributor to South Africa's foreign earnings of which 44% are derived from commodity exports. In 2010 the group achieved an operating profit of $9.8bn. In addition, since its primary listing on the London Stock Exchange in 1999, the foreign shareholding has substantially increased, yielding a capital inflow of nearly R72.5 billion into the country.

We are also South Africa's largest private sector employer, with a workforce of more than 70,500 full-time employees and 21,000 contractors
